+Whole30 Days 5-6
June 5, 2017
My intense self-journaling seemed to come to a halt on Monday. I think in some ways I was already completely over this program. Or perhaps it was the fact that for the next couple of days all I wanted to do was nap. According to the Whole30 timeline, this is quite normal. Up until the change in my diet five days ago, I was depending on other resources (mostly sugar in unhealthy doses) to get me through the day. It was very common for me to have eaten sugar in some quantity before I went to bed and to wake up to have lots of sugar in my coffee in the morning. My body was crashing because it wasn’t having its usual “energy” doses all throughout the day. Unless I had to be somewhere, I spent the majority of my days on the couch re-watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix.
On Monday, I started a new part-time retail job for the summer. My past experiences of working in retail haven’t really been the best. I’ve worked both at Forever 21 and Macy’s, both of which I quit after working there for a month at most. At Macy’s, I was hired for holiday help, so I would work 11-hour shifts completely exhausted that I would try to find an empty secluded spot to sit down on the floor for 15 minutes (while on the job, oops). However, I am quite excited for this retail job partially because 1) it’s a smaller store with not lots of crowd traffic and 2) I get an associate discount that I can use since they sell plus-size clothing :).
I worked my first half shift from 5 till close and because I knew I wouldn’t receive a break, I packed small snacks to eat since I had a later lunch that afternoon. This is when I’ve discovered how LÄRABARS are a huge lifesaver! These are essentially fruit and nut bars; not all flavors are compliant with Whole30 so check your resources. I had gone to Target earlier that day to pick up some additional groceries that Trader Joe’s didn’t have and decided to buy a box of the Apple Pie (compliant) flavor on a whim. LÄRABARS are quite expensive (a box of 5 was $5.19 at my local Target) and Whole30 really encourages you to use them as an emergency snack. It was the perfect “emergency” dinner alongside a 100-calorie pack of almonds.

The friends I’m made here in Florida are literally the best. In essence, we are a bunch of crazy nuts who like to be loud and have a great time whatever we are doing. If you decide to pursue Whole30, the best suggestion I can give you is surround yourself with the right support group! Whether it is your immediate family, friends, spouse, coworker, neighbor, imaginary friend, etc. it makes it 10x easier to accomplish your goals. I told my immediate core group of friends here in FL and from college what I was doing and I automatically received their full support. I even semi-convinced a fellow FL friend to do Whole30 with me!
My core group of girlfriends and I typically get together once a week to have a Girl’s Night. We do lots of different activities such as a Netflix and wine night, bowling or just a meal out. On this day, we all decided to take advantage of our local theater’s $6 Tuesday to see ‘Wonder Woman’ and agreed to go out to eat before the movie. They chose to eat at my favorite Mexican place in town (the same one I went to the night before I started Whole30) because it was our mutual friend’s birthday and she really enjoys tacos. To be honest, I was a bit bummed because I didn’t know if I would be able to eat anything there like I had in the past. I took the afternoon to review their menu online and call to ask the annoying questions (what kind of marinade did they use? Sugar-free options? Gluten-free options?). I HATE to be that person, but it’s easier asking those questions beforehand.
As it turned out, I was able to enjoy their California taco (chicken, bacon, tomato, lime vinaigrette, no cheese) as a taco salad. I steered clear from their corn chips and was quite proud of myself when I resisted eating them. In order to show their support, most of my friends ordered water with me instead of having me drool over their frozen margaritas. When our mutual friend received a free dessert for her birthday, she invited everyone to have a taste. In truth, I wasn’t hungry having been full from dinner and the though of eating sugar did not appeal to me. A true step in the right direction!
We went on to see ‘Wonder Woman‘ at our local theater complete with reclining leather chairs (seriously the best thing ever!). My sweet friend Natalie was able to coach me through when I expressed a desire to have some popcorn because the movie theater butter smell (y’all know what I’m talking about) was driving me nuts. It was insanely helpful- again I’m so grateful for my support system! By the way per my recommendation, go see ‘Wonder Woman’ if you haven’t yet! It’s AMAZING- Gal Gadot is incredible as the title character. And if I’m being completely honest, Chris Pine is actually my husband, so he isn’t too bad to look at either 😉
Peace & Love,
