+Whole30 Challenge Days 21-24
June 21, 2017
Many things in my personal life piled on top of each other on this day. And it was mostly things that were negative and added to my frustration level. So, it was definitely a hump day. The only notes that I have from this Wednesday were that I ate a turkey burger in a lettuce wrap with bacon, tomato and guacamole for a late lunch. For dinner, I had two cups of green tea with peach. I just remember not having it on this day, so I went to bed rather early. Which can be quite a shock because I’m a huge night owl. I settled into bed with some Netflix and hopes for a better tomorrow.

Here is a lovely selfie of what I look like going into work. I always seem to start my shift at opening (9:30 am), so I have plenty of time to get ready in the morning to be presentable. Our retail store doesn’t have a dress code per se, but we can only wear certain items. For example, I cannot wear jeans unless I wear them with a blazer and high heels. SCREW THAT. Thankfully, I have lots of outfits and accessories to choose from to achieve a professional look without destroying my feet in the process. I also jump at any opportunity to do my makeup. I’ve been trying different lipsticks out to try to spice up my looks for the past year now. Fun fact: since I was a dancer growing up, I only ever wore makeup and lipstick for our dress rehearsals/recitals (I didn’t really start wearing day-to-day makeup till 9th grade-yikes!). I have a tendency to touch my face or brush against it often during the day, so if I ever wore lipstick in a casual setting it either wound up on my clothes or smeared across my face (a true sight to see!). In truth, I forgot that I was wearing lipstick 95% of the time…and sometimes still forget. The lipstick I’m wearing is actually from Tarte– it’s their quick dry matte lip paint formula in the shade raspberry. True to its title, it actually does dry quickly and is long lasting which means less smears on my face and less reapplications!
In addition to my morning coffee with almond milk (a new discovery!), I also had half of an Apple Pie LÄRABAR. For lunch, I packed myself some leftover chicken veggie soup, grapes and a peach. I decided not to have dinner on this day simply because I ate my lunch at a later time and truth be told I wasn’t that hungry later in the night.

Pay Day, Pay Day!! But first, I had an EARLY EARLY appointment. Well it was actually a job interview at the crack of dawn at 8:00 a.m. I think I set like 15 alarms for the morning because I didn’t trust myself. The majority of my morning was spent getting ready, so I opted to skip breakfast and instead just have coffee on the drive to the interview. After the positive talk, I went home to change out of my interview wear and chill on the couch for a quick nap before lunch. I had an earlier lunch since I was quite hungry from skipping breakfast. I made my “dunno dinner” (that I first made on Day 19) because it’s the perfect thing to whip up when I don’t know what the heck I want to eat.
After lunch, I headed to the mall to spend a teeny tiny portion of my paycheck. First I went to Macy’s because I somehow still had a $25 gift card from two Christmases ago that I’ve never used. I was searching for a new pair of PJs and ended up finding an ankle pant set in pink and navy (perfect!) for only $11. Onward I went to Rue21, which was actually having a major sale since the store was closing for good. All of the clothing items left were conveniently plus size and were 90% off!! I found myself 3 ‘skater style’ dresses for $1.99 each and a pair of high-waisted jean shorts for $2.15. It felt amazing to find 4 items that I could wear for only $8.00! Lastly, I headed to Bath & Body Works because I was out of hand soap for my bathroom. For YEARS, I was using their deep cleansing soap in the scent Sea Island Cotton. When I ran out, I went to the store to restock to learn from a sales associate that they retired the scent from the soap line in stores and I could only get it online. Instead of going through that hassle, she graciously recommended similar smelling scents to me and I went home with the deep cleansing Turquoise Waters soap. When I went shopping this past Friday, the store was running a deal on certain soaps that were only $3.50. GUESS WHICH SCENT WASN’T INCLUDED IN THIS DEAL?! Instead, I choose the scent Lakeside Afternoon, so I was able to get the $3 off. I also chose a hand sanitizer in the scent Cucumber Melon (hello ‘90s throwback!) for $1.50. Sometimes you just have to treat yourself 🙂
To end the day, I headed to my favorite coffee shop in town to write and study plus enjoy an almond milk iced coffee. For dinner, I grabbed a carnitas bowl from Chipotle with mild salsa, lettuce and guacamole.

This Saturday I actually did make it to the farmers market, well actually two markets. I’m clearly making up for lost time. The first farmers market opens early at 7:30am and closes around 11:30am. In the summer, they are a smaller market than in-season time, so getting there in the middle of their hours is okay for June. I decided to wear one of the new skater dresses that I purchased yesterday. I cannot even begin to tell you how long I’ve been looking for a casual black & white stripped dress. Truth be told I think I giggled in the store when I found it. I tied my hair into a half-up half-down bun look because it was so hot outside.
Farmers markets always give me a sense of peace. I love looking at homemade products and buying local, fresh ingredients and produce from different vendors. My budget for both markets was $20. At the first market I arrived around 10:00 a.m. I love this market because it is near the downtown section of town with pretty architecture, lots of boutiques and the beach pier. You can smell the ocean from the market and it brings me back to my summers growing up at the beach in NJ. Since it’s summertime there weren’t many vendors, but I was able to pick up three zucchinis and a bowl of 22 red potatoes for $5. I also bought my favorite breakfast açaí bowl from a local company for $8.50. I tried to park at the beach pier to walk on it while enjoying my açaí bowl, but it was a bit too crowded. At the next market, which is more uptown, I bought 4 white peaches from one vendor for $3 and a bunch of 5 bananas for $2. I was really successful at both markets and had a fun time walking around the surrounding areas.
After going home to refrigerate my farmers market finds, I headed out to my local Super Target to pick up some groceries for the week. I came a little higher on my budget, but I did score some fresh summer cherries. When I used to work at summer day camp, all of us counselors would sit together on the grass during our lunch break and have a cherry pit spitting distance contest. It sounds gross, but it’s what I’ll always associate with the fruit and summertime. I spent the rest of my afternoon studying out on my lanai for my upcoming exam on Monday. What are some of your favorite farmer’s market finds?
Peace & Love,
